Business Area

Environment

Project Type

Energy and Water

Location

Southern Cuanza

Project Description

The project aims to develop a wastewater drainage network and the corresponding treatment plant (sanitation), as well as to extend and expand the existing water distribution network in the city of Sumbe (in the province of Cuanza Sul). The project also includes the establishment of the Laboratory for Water and Effluent Analysis and Quality Control, to be located in Sumbe.

The methodological approach adopted in the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) incorporated the social component from the initial stages of project development, resulting in interim ESIA documents that served as a tool to assist the designer in evaluating the project.

This procedure is in line with international guidelines, ensuring public participation at every stage through public consultations and the collection of feedback on the project.

The ESIA identified very significant positive impacts resulting from the implementation of an effective sanitation system, which will contribute to improved health and quality of life. For the negative impacts identified, mitigation measures were recommended to ensure the project’s environmental compatibility and prevent it from having significant implications for environmental and social balance and harmony.
